THE REUNION OF ALL REUNIONS

I love reunions, maybe because I simply love meeting friends. Whenever there is a birthday bash, lunch date, tea or a breakfast do at a friend’s or wherever, I try my best to be there. The reason: we usually have a blast and I simply feel so refreshed and rejuvenated after- no amount of time at a spa can beat. I hope they feel the same way too.
I was flicking channels the other day and stumbled upon this movie called: Michelle and Romi’s high school reunion. It wasn’t a great movie, in fact it was probably a B movie, but it was the point made in the movie that got me thinking. (err.. yup, the B movie did have a point.. ha ha)
Michelle and Romi were 2 girls which were.. different, to put it mildly. They were not the typical high school girls, they had their own style, fashion sense and the other girls always made fun of them. Fast forward 10 years, they were invited to their school reunion. By this time they were living in L.A., Romi was a cashier and Michelle was unemployed. But they still had fun together and thought that their lives were fantastic.
….. Until they had to fill in a form from the reunion committee detailing their career and what they have been up to for the past 10 years. They realised then, that their lives were not impressive at all, but they still wanted to go to the reunion. So they concocted a story to impress people, that they, invented ‘post its’!! Romi thought of it and Michelle came up with the glue formula! (ha ha ha… I have to tell you that they are a bit bimbo-ish, and naive!) Anyway, off they went, and yup you guessed it.. when they told their friends they invented Post-Its, they became a laughing stock. They were ashamed but they realised something; it doesn’t matter that their lives were not impressive, they had fun together because they were best friends.
With the Big 40 reunion just around the corner, I sometimes wonder whether there are people who would come to the reunion with impressive stories to brag. I also wonder whether there are people who will never go to reunions because their lives are not impressive to other people.
Alas, I have to miss the Big 40 because of another commitment that I can’t avoid. As I read my friends’ fb postings about their preparations for this event, I get so excited, so happy and so glad that we remain friends, the best of friends for over 30 years. I think I speak for everyone when I say this; we don’t care what you do, we don’t care what your husbands do, what car you drive, we don’t care if you are single, married, divorced, we don’t care if you have tonnes of money. We care that you are happy, happy to be with friends, happy to meet friends. Because we are the best of friends, true friends.
So, have fun girls!!!! I love you! May we remain friends, dunia akhirat! Ameen.
